brine storage tanks
October 5, 2026

A brine system depends on the tank that makes and stores its salt solution. That tank must maintain consistent brine saturation, accept bulk salt deliveries, and give crews access for cleaning and inspection. Belding Tank Technologies Inc. designs its BRINE-TEK™ Downflow Brinemakers for this work, building on the thousands of FDA-approved fibreglass-reinforced plastic tanks it has supplied to the brine industry. Each unit pairs an FRP storage tank with a packaged component system, giving users a turnkey setup for brine making and storage. This article explains how brine storage tanks are built, equipped, controlled, and sized.

People Also Ask

Can brine tank vents be fitted with screens?
Yes, Belding Tank offers removable insect and bird screens for both its gooseneck and mushroom vent styles.

Is the BRINE-TEK™ dust collector easy to service?
Yes, the polyester dust collector bag is mounted low for ease of servicing.

Why Brine Storage Needs a Corrosion-Resistant Tank

Fiberglass tanks resist corrosion and do not rust like steel. They need no internal coatings, which means less maintenance, and their lightweight design makes installation easier. The BRINE-TEK™ line builds its brine storage tanks from FRP to bring these properties to brine service. A clear resin top coat with a U.V. inhibitor also comes standard for outdoor installations.

What Salt-Saturated Solutions Demand From FRP Construction

Consistent saturation is central to the BRINE-TEK™ design. Downflow brinemaking keeps the solution saturated because, as influent water rises, the higher-density brine sinks. With rock and solar salts, sludge accumulates at the bottom of the tank for easy removal, and the design permits desalinization of that sludge by backwash leaching.

The tank must also carry significant weight. Maximum gross weights for the BRINE-TEK™ FRP storage tank range from 74,000 lbs on the BT-8-23 to 277,000 lbs on the BT-14-100. Installation requires continuous rigid support, proper foundation support, careful handling, correct venting, and aligned fittings.

How Fill, Vent, and Manway Features Support Brine Handling

Every BRINE-TEK™ unit comes with standard components for salt delivery, venting, and access:

  • Salt fill pipe: a 4″ I.D. 304 stainless steel pipe with a camlock coupler and cap for pneumatic delivery truck hose connection.
  • Vent: an 8″ I.D. FRP gooseneck vent with an FRP/PVC vent duct assembly and a polyester dust collector bag.
  • Top manway: a 24″ I.D. access manway with a hinged, weighted cover for emergency venting.
  • Side manway: a 24″ I.D. access manway for cleaning and inspection.

A side manway is recommended on any tank with a straight side of 120″ (10′) or more, and every standard BRINE-TEK™ model exceeds that, with straight sides of 180″ or longer. For work at the top of the tank, an optional ladder and safety cage assembly provides access to the top manway.

Which Operations Rely on Bulk Brine Storage

Food grade sanitary applications are a direct fit, since the BRINE-TEK™ FRP storage tank uses FDA approvable polyester resin construction to meet them. Belding Tank Technologies Inc. also serves water treatment, wastewater treatment, food and beverage, agriculture, and chemical processing, among other industries. Teams evaluating water treatment brine storage can use the model table later in this article to compare storage capacity, delivery size, and draw rate across the standard range.

How Level Control Aids Consistent Brine Supply

An optional automatic influent water level control adjusts incoming water based on brine demand, and an optional Bindicator salt level indicator is also available. Both come with supporting documentation, including a liquid level control unit guide and a Bindicator YoYo installation manual.

Each model also has a maximum brine draw rate that depends on the salt used, listed with granulated salt first and rock or solar salt second. Rates range from 20/12 GPM on the BT-8-23 to 66/40 GPM on the BT-14-100.

What Cold Weather Options Protect Brine Systems

Outdoor brine storage tanks may need protection from low temperatures. BRINE-TEK™ offers an optional Cool Weather Protection package with polyfoam insulation and 500 watt, 120 volt heat panels. Belding Tank’s broader heat systems place heat panels on the tank exterior, cover them with insulation and an FRP insulation case, and maintain product temperature. The company offers 500 and 400 watt panels in 120 or 240 volt standard.

When you request a quote, you can note whether the tank will sit indoors or outdoors and select insulation with heat panels. Belding Tank also asks for the minimum and maximum temperature conditions, the target and ambient temperatures for any heat maintenance system, and snow and wind loads.

How to Plan a Brine Tank with Belding Tank Technologies Inc

Start with storage capacity and delivery size. The standard BRINE-TEK™ range covers seven models:

Model Diameter Straight Side Storage Capacity Max Delivery Max Brine Draw (GPM)
BT-8-23 96″ 180″ 23 tons 15 tons 20/12
BT-9-33 108″ 180″ 33 tons 19 tons 25/15
BT-10-40 120″ 192″ 40 tons 25 tons 33/20
BT-11.5-53 138″ 192″ 53 tons 35 tons 45/27
BT-12-63 144″ 204″ 63 tons 40 tons 50/30
BT-12-75 144″ 240″ 75 tons 55 tons 50/30
BT-14-100 168″ 240″ 100 tons 74 tons 66/40

Next, confirm site conditions. Belding Tank states that safe and proper handling and installation are a must for trouble free service, so review its handling and installation guide before delivery. The brochure calls for flexible piping connections and lifting by designated lugs only. The company also publishes an operation and maintenance instruction manual for the system. For water treatment brine storage or any other brine service, share your expected brine draw, salt type, delivery method, and temperature range with the Belding Tank team.

Choosing the right brine storage tanks comes down to how well a tank can make, hold, and deliver brine for your operation. The BRINE-TEK™ system brings those needs together in one packaged design. It pairs downflow brine-making for consistent saturation with pneumatic salt fill, top and side manway access, and optional level control and cold weather protection. With seven standard models ranging from 23 to 100 tons of storage, sizing starts with the capacity, delivery size, and draw rate your site requires. Many of the same material and construction questions also apply to chemical service, as covered in what to look for in FRP chemical storage tanks for industrial use.  To discuss a BRINE-TEK™ FRP storage tank for your site, contact Belding Tank Technologies Inc.
